Farm steel takes a beating unlike almost anything else — frost, salt, manure, chemical, vibration, impact, and constant load cycling. Cracks and breaks show up in predictable places:

- Mild and higher-strength steel implement frames — MIG or stick, matched filler
- Aluminum tanks, sprayer booms, and equipment guards — TIG or aluminum MIG
- Cast iron gear cases and older housings — pre-heat, nickel rod, controlled cool-down
- Stainless dairy and milk-handling components — matched stainless filler
Welding aluminum tubing with steel wire, or cast iron with regular hardwire, is a fast track to a repair that cracks again the first load cycle. The truck is set up for each of these on the same call.
Why farm welds crack a second and third time
If a cracked implement hitch or loader bracket has been welded twice and cracked a third time, the weld is not really the problem. The base metal is fatigued, the geometry concentrates stress at one spot, or the load path has shifted because something else in the machine bent. Welding the same crack a fourth time without addressing the cause just buys a few weeks. On a real repair we look at the whole load path — where the bracket ties into the frame, whether a gusset or doubler plate is needed, whether the cracked section has lost enough material that build-up is required, and whether the part is bent in a way that locks stress into the new weld.
Repair, reinforce, or replace
The honest answer depends on what we find on-site:
- Base metal condition — heavily rusted or pitted steel may not hold a clean weld
- Crack location and length, and whether it has propagated into a critical section
- Whether previous repairs left hard, brittle weld metal that has to be removed
- Distortion or bending that must be straightened before welding
- Whether a gusset, doubler, or bracket rebuild is a better fix than a repeat weld
- Manufacturer guidance on cast or structural components
Hot work on the farm — safety first
Welding on a farm is not the same as welding in a shop. Barns, hay, chaff, fuel, chemicals, and livestock change the risk picture. Before we strike an arc:
- Fuel tanks, hydraulic reservoirs, and pressurized lines are addressed or shielded
- Combustible dust, chaff, and dry bedding are cleared or wetted down
- A charged fire extinguisher stays within reach of the arc
- Livestock is moved out of the immediate work area when possible
- Battery grounds are disconnected where welding current could damage electronics

What a typical on-site farm welding call looks like
1. Photos and phone scope
Before we roll a truck, a few clear photos and a short description save everyone time. What broke, what it does, and what it was doing when it failed.
2. On-site diagnosis
Walk the equipment. Find the crack origin. Decide whether it is a one-time repair or a recurring problem that needs reinforcement.
3. Prep and brace
Paint, rust, manure, hydraulic residue, and prior weld bead all come off the joint. Where distortion matters, we brace or straighten the piece before welding so we do not lock stress into the finished repair.
4. Weld with the correct process
The right filler and process for the material — with enough amperage and control to get penetration without warping thin sections.
5. Reinforce where it earns its keep
A gusset at a high-stress corner, a doubler over a fatigued plate, or a bushing sleeve at a worn pivot often costs little and keeps you from calling us back for the same repair next season.
Worn pivots, pins, and bores on farm equipment
Loader pin bores, hitch pin holes, and pivot points wear oversize over time. Pins clatter, bushings walk out, and brackets eventually tear.
